چکیده

We investigate bulge and disk scaling relations using a volume-corrected sample of earlyto intermediate-type disk galaxies in which, importantly, the biasing flux from additional nuclear components on the inner bulge light-profile has been modeled and removed. Structural parameters are obtained from a seeing-convolved, bulge+disk+nuclear-component decomposition applied to NIR surface brightness profiles covering from ∼10 pc to the outer disk. The profiles were obtained by combining Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS images with larger field-of-view ground-based images. Bulge and disk parameters, and bulge-to-disk ratios, are shown as a function of bulge luminosity, galaxy Hubble type, and bulge Sérsic index n. Photometric parameters of bulges and disks are observed to correlate with bulge luminosity and with Sérsic index n. In contrast, for the unbarred, early to intermediate types covered by the sample, Hubble type does not correlate with bulge and disk components, and their various ratios. In this sense, the early-to-intermediate spiral Hubble sequence is scale-free. However, galaxies themselves are not scale-free, the critical scale being the luminosity of the bulge. The central stellar density of the bulge is shown to increase strongly with bulge luminosity. Mathematical expressions are given for the stronger relations, which can be used to test and constrain galaxy formation models. Subject headings: galaxies : spiral — galaxies : structure

High Spatial Resolution Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS Observations of Markarian 231

Observations of Markarian 231 at 1.1 mm taken with NICMOS on the Hubble Space Telescope are described. The brightness of the object in the near-infrared, and the inherent short-term stability of the NICMOS optical and instrumental system, enables the application of special observational and analysis techniques that effectively increase high spatial resolution. By these means, we set an upper li...

Galactic Bulges from Hubble Space Telescope Nicmos Observations: Nuclear Properties

Using Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS images, we analyze the structural properties of bulges of S0-Sbc galaxies down to scales of ∼10 pc. Isophotal profiles are matched with those from widerfield, ground-based K-band images enabling us to sample from the nucleus to the disk-dominated region of each galaxy, and thus to include proper bulge-disk decompositions in the analysis. The majority of galax...

An Extended Star Formation History for the Galactic Center from Hubble Space Telescope/NICMOS Observations

We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Near-Infrared Camera and Multiobject Spectrometer (NICMOS) observations as evidence that continuous star formation has created much of the central stellar cusp of the Galaxy. The data are the deepest ever obtained for a Galactic Center (GC) population, being >50% complete for mF205W< 19.3, or initial stellar masses &2 M⊙. We use Geneva and Padova stellar ...

Galactic Bulges from Hubble Space Telescope Nicmos Observations: Central Galaxian Objects, and Nuclear Profile Slopes,

We have measured the central structural properties for a sample of S0-Sbc galaxies down to scales of ∼10 pc using Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS images. We find that the photometric masses of the central star clusters, which occur in 58% of our sample, are related to their host bulge masses such that MPS = 10 7.75±0.15 (MBul/10 M⊙) . Put together with recent data on bulges hosting supermassive b...
